Bills to Watch: H.B. 267 – Antidiscrimination Amendments – C. Johnson

Posted by Curtis Haring

You know how some people have that one Black, Hispanic, Female, and disabled friend – you know, the one that magically makes it ok to be racist, xenophobic, sexist, and insulting at a party? Well guess what, as terrible of a human being as they are, they can’t act too close minded because the state an nation mandated that these groups are protected from overt discrimination. These are good laws that level the playing field and allow people to move up in the world.

But did you know the same rules do not apply to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered (GLBT) individuals? It is a fact – someone could be fired, refused a job, kicked out of an apartment, and be denied things such as a car loan simply because they don’t have a traditional sexual lifestyle. Recently a poll, conducted by Equality Utah, stated that 63% of Utahns supported expanding the rights of GLBT members.

This is where H.B. 267 comes in. Proposed by Representative Christine Johnson (D – Salt Lake, District 25), H.B. 267 would change numerous sections of Utah law to include sexual or gender orientation. Basically if there is any part of the law that states that the state won’t discriminate based on race, sex, creed, etc., Johnson’s bill would throw in the GLBT community.

This is a good bill that is supported by the citizens of the state of Utah. Naturally it will be a lightning rod for far right conservatives who will be seen as dinosaurs in 20 years regarding the gay rights issue. We will see where this one goes…
