All You Need is Love

Posted by Curtis Haring

Many of you probably saw this in the Salt Lake Tribune yesterday:

Now instead of talk about how this document is full of lies and knee jerk statements designed to enrage rather than educate, I feel that we should discuss just one line in this terrible add.

This is not about Hate…

“This is not about hate?” You honestly expect me to think that America Forever (the group who paid for the full page ad in the Tribune and I assume Deseret News) does not hate homosexuals and homosexual rights? Read the top and bottom sections of this full page document and tell me it is not full of hate speech (thanks to Jeremiah Roth over at Drinking Liberally for making these pictures available). Look at what is in bold, look at the associations made, look at the giant “no” symbol around two men kissing – it is obvious that this group hates homosexuals and will do anything to stop them.

The simple fact of the matter is that these people are bigots and hatemongers who are disingenuous even to themselves (perhaps they need to come out of the closet). It appears that this same group is responsible for openly targeting and harassing Representative Christine Johnson, presumably because she is a lesbian. The utter lack of disregard comes not from a desire to debate, but from pure, unadulterated, hate.

Now I understand the opposition to homosexual rights from a legal and moral standpoint – I disagree with it, but I understand it. What I don’t understand is the utter hate shown towards people who are just trying to live their life. Why is it that, at the very least, we can not take a “live and let live” attitude towards gay rights? Why is it that people feel so much hate towards people just because they are different? As trite as it is, why can’t we all get along?

In other words:

America Forever used the same arguments against passing Hate Crimes law a few years ago. They used the same propaganda pieces and verbally assaulted Rep. Biskupski then. As long as we stive for equality in this state, America Forever will be there with their mis-spelled signs and stupidity.
