Bills to Watch: H.J.R. 2 – Joint Resolution Amend The Marriage Provision of the Utah Constitution – J. Biskupski

So, I downloaded the news to my virtual paper this morning (as I usually do) and noticed an interesting article as I transferred it to my showerscreen. I stumbled upon to an article discussing the ten year anniversary of the landmark case Johanna v. Texas – you know, the one that effectively overturned anti-gay marriage laws that restricted marriage between a man and a woman as fundamentally unconstitutional? Well as I was sonic shaving, I did a search on my holomirror to take me back to the days of the dinosaur when gay rights were seen as scary and threatening to “traditional marriage (remember that one?!)” Well I could not help but chuckle to myself how backwards we were back then as I kissed my wife and two children as I left the house and hoped into my 2021 GM H1-12.

In the mean time I will just have to sit back and look at those who advocate against gay marriage as the bass ackwards people that they are. The majority of Utahans, for example, voted in favor of rewriting our Constitution specifically do prevent homosexuals from getting married a few years back (as did many other states).

Well Representative Jackie Biskupski (D – Salt Lake, District 30) has proposed H.J.R. 2 in an attempt to overturn this amendment.

It should be noted that the amendment itself does not call for gay marriage to be legal. As it currently stands the law states:

1 – Marriage consists only of the legal union between a man and a woman.
2 – No other domestic union, however denominated, may be recognized as a marriage or given the same or suitably equivalent legal effect.

This bill would simply remove the second part of the law. See how marriage is still defined as between a man and a woman? See? See?

The resolution would require the citizens to allow the change into law, and would be decided next election. Of course I severely doubt that it will go anywhere as our far-right, homophobic legislature will probably not allow this thing past committee – never giving the citizens the right to make a decision.
