As I was taking a break from reading volumes of paperwork known as FAA test certification, I decided to hop on Facebook to see what was going on with all the hip cool cats who know how to social network.
Whelp, my aunt just joined a new group – Idaho Democratic Party – mildly curious, I clicked on the link and discovered that the group currently has 544 fans. Intrigued, I decided to check in on the Democratic Party of Utah‘s group page only to discover that it has 249 members. Idaho has more than twice as many Democrats on their page!
Now this is far from an official “party strength indicator,” but it does say something about the technological prowess of each states members and the party on the whole. In other words the Utah Democrats are lagging behind in the ability to reach members through electronic communication. I hate to say it, but this does lend some credence to the recent dust up over on The World, According to Me and Bob’s point that we are not properly utilizing proper media outlets.
Now I know that the Utah Democratic Party can not regulate who does and does not join their group, but, in the same breath I have to wonder how much the party actually reaches out and makes people aware that they are on various social networks (a link on your home page does not a communication make).
We as a party must reach out more and take advantage of modern technology – I want to do it for the Salt Lake County Democrats, and I see no reason why someone can’t step up at the state level. If we want to control our message, we must take control of the modern media.
P.S. I know the Utah Dems have taken a bit of a beating on the blogosphere this week, and it was not my intention to add fuel to the fire, I simply am a curious Facebooker!

I knew the Young dems have a facebook but did not know the dem party of utah as a whole had a facebook page
Facebook is the new internet portal. (Recall when portals, like MSN and Yahoo were hot shit?) Basically, if you’re not on facebook, you don’t exist. It’s like not having a webpage used to be.
Keeping people informed, interested, and intrigued. Constant contact, regular updates, interesting shit going on…
Idaho has 6 Drinking Liberally chapters. Utah has 1. Maybe it isn’t just a party thing…
I started the Utah Dems Facebook page when I became Treasurer. Yeah, I could have done more with it but what I’ve found with my involvement in the party is too much throwing in people’s faces starts to piss them off. Not everyone cares like we do.
