As I go through and communicate with fellow delegates, I am finding that there is a common theme: we need to make sure that people know who we are and what we are about – we can’t let Republicans tell us who we are.
I have the same concerns, and know the right solution.
For far to long, we have, indeed allowed Republicans to tell voters who we are and what we believe in. We sit iddley by as we are called tree hugging, Birkenstock wearing, Subaru driving liberals who are elitist and want to kill babies.
This is not true, and it we must fight to change it.
When elected, I intend, amongst other things, to make sure that voters know what Democrats are doing for them at all levels of government. We have a prime opportunity with the Obama administration and the stimulus package – do you like the new rail line going down to Provo? Thank Obama and the stimulus package. Like that cities and counties are repaving the roads? Thank Obama. Like that our schools are actually being rebuilt to, not only teach our students, but to be more environmentally friendly? Thank you President Obama.
We must also point out our true voice at home.
Democrats did not try to restrict the rights of the GLBT community – rather they agreed with the majority of Utahans. Democrats did not lobby against liquor laws that make our state more friendly to tourism, thus catapulting us into the 20th century (yes I know what I said). Democrats don’t vote in favor of sprawling communities that are blights on the land and add to our traffic, all while lining the pockets of developers. No! Democrats fight for what is right.
We must stop being afraid to say we are Democrats and that we are liberal.
I am proud of my political ideology, and I am tired of people whispering that they too are Democrats. We must stand tall and we must fight.
After all, why would any one vote for us if we are not even proud of ourselves?
We will change how we are viewed, and we will stand tall. Vote for me, Curtis Haring, this April 18th at Cottonwood High. Details can be found here.
