Bills to Watch: HB 12 – Abortion Amendments, C. Wimmer

Posted by Curtis Haring

wimmecHot off the heals of the last legislative session, where the state of Utah officially forces women to be made aware of the fact that they may be charged for homicide,  we have HB 12, by Carl Wimmer (R-Herriman-District 52).

This one is a doozie my friends.  Where as previous bills may have just snubbed their nose at a woman’s right to choose, this one out-and-out spits on Roe v. Wade.

You see, if this bill were to pass, women would be charged with homicide by removing the current law saying that women seeking an abortion are no longer exempt from the current law allowing a woman the right to choose. Physicians could still legally perform abortions, mind you, but the moment they do, they have to call the cops on the woman they performed it on.

Now, aside from my personal loathing towards those who attack a woman’s right to choose, I would also like to point out the astounding cost this is going to have on our state. Think about it, Representative Wimmer, if we start charging wifes, mothers, sisters, cousins, and nieces with murder, how many people will be added to our justice system? How many more jails will we have to build to hold these “criminals?” How many children will have to be placed into foster care? How many families will loose an income source and possibly become homeless? How many lives are you willing to destroy, Representative Wimmer, in you zealotry?

Oh, and there is the inevitable costs associated with the cretin Constitutional challenge. Thankfully, the Legislature, in their infinite wisdom last year, passed a litigation trust amendment that allows the Legislature to put funds into an account specifically designed to defend laws such as this. I know that our massive surplus of funds will easily be able to absorb the costs associated with running a case all the way to the Supreme Court.

Shame on you Representative Wimmer, for not only making criminals out of women who have already had to make a difficult decision, but for making not just poor, but downright stupid, policy.

I made a $25 gift to Planned Parenthood in Wimmer’s honor. I think this will be a way for me to give them an annual contribution when the Leg presents its yearly anti-choice bill.

    Curtis,

How can we take anything you post seriously, when you either completely misunderstand this bill? Or could it be that you are simply making this up, so as to rile up the two readers you have?

Rep. Carl Wimmer’s bill does not, in any way, make abortion illegal. Are you an serious? You comment about a Doctor having to call the cops is laughable. What this bill does do, is makes and ILLEGAL abortion a crime. What is an illegal abortion? It is an abortion performed by anyone other than a Doctor, or under a doctors care. So if a woman hires some guy to beat her in the stomach until the unborn baby dies, she can be charged.

You either are unable to understand or read legislative bills, or you are simply dishonest. Whch is it?

Hey Lee, 2 readers? Ummm, that would obviously include you since, after all, you did post a reply to this article (and therefore, I would guess, you read it). By the way, you might consider reviewing further comments before posting them. Here’s a little tip: try spell check.

Curtis– thank you for giving us all a head’s up on this crazy bill. Time to renew my NOW membership! By the way, I always get a bit giddy when I see (in this case read) a man sticking up for women’s rights, especially in this oh-so-enlightened state we call home.

  7. Lee-
Some of the things may be wrong, however, you obviously need to read the legislation put forth on H 12 yourself. It claims that women who, even in their first trimester, have a miscarriage due to “reckless behavior” could possibly charged with homicide. So if a woman goes hiking and slips, she could possibly end up it prison. How does that make you feel?
