Bills to Watch: HB 200 – Informed Consent Amendments, C. Wimmer

Posted by Curtis Haring

I seem to be picking on Representative Carl Wimmer (R-Herriman-District 52) a lot lately, first about his terrible felon creating abortion law, then his utter hatred towards the layman, and now I am going to have to pick apart his latest freedom abolishing law HB 200 – Informed Consent Amendments. Ya see, it is not so much that I am out to get him, I just feel it is my responsibility as an amateur watch-dog to point out that he is truly bad at making laws.

Now, I am not going to go into the whole “right to choose” argument that you, dear reader, have long ago made your mind up on. Either you are pro-choice or pro-life. Ok, fine, I get that. No I want to point out why anyone should be opposed to this law.

I direct you towards 76-7-305(3)(b)(ii). This little section, in short, says that a doctor can perform an abortion without consent in the event of medical emergencies. You may note how this section is crossed out. Now the right for a doctor to perform an emergency abortion doesn’t change, but what does change is that a doctor would not be able to perform an abortion if it is not a “serious medical emergency” or if  “time (permits) compliance with the requirement to provide the information described”

You see, this bill would create a chilling effect on the ability for doctors to perform an abortion in the event of a serious medical emergency. If this bill were to pass, doctors would have to err on the side of caution when it comes to saving a pregnant woman’s life because they will now have to ask themselves if they have time to get consent and comply with the law. They will have to second guess themselves and their patients will suffer for the delay in their actions.

In short, this bill prevents doctors from doing their work. Legislators should not be prescribing medicine anymore than they should be telling engineers how to build a bridge.

There are other things in this bill that are concerning too that I am sure Wimmer could care less about – things like the utter psychological damage he is forcing upon women in a time of crisis and how this will, most likely manifest itself in either resentment towards the child or suicidal thoughts in regards to the unborn fetus. But, again, I am sure that he has thought long and hard about that too.
