Bills to Watch: HB 288 – Daylight Saving Time, K. Sumsion
Ok, this one is just a little odd.
For some reason Representative Kenneth Sumsion (R – American Fork – District 56) wants to do away with daylight savings time with the aptly named HB 288 - Daylight Saving Time.
Yup, for some reason Sumsion wants to join Arizona and Hawaii in doing away with daylight savings time because…it is a pain to fall back?
Actually, I suspect that this is the lamest attempt yet by the legislature to take on the federal government.
Yes, I suspect that this is a message bill at its worse – this bill will achieve absolutely nothing other than confuse people and not actually change how the government does business in relation to the states.
I mean, what other reason could we honestly have for doing this? It is not that great of an inconvenience to spring forward during the summer, and an argument can be made that an extra hour of light makes our life a little bit better by allow us to, say, drive in an extra hour of light or enjoy our parks more after work during the long and enjoyable summer months. Sure, we all complain when we have to fall back – but really, is Sumsion that big of a morning hater to propose this law?
I frankly just don’t see the need and, therefore, am opposed. Oh, and if this is an attack on the federal government, all I have to say is that this is a rather lame attempt to do so.
Springing forward isn’t a problem, but I hate Falling back! It pains me that it gets dark so soon towards the end of December. Setting the clock back an hour just adds insult to injury. I say, make Daylight Savings permanent!
I think the original intent was to give farmers extra light, and to save on energy costs, right?
I don’t think farmers and energy have gone away, so I don’t see why we need to get rid of it.
I would LOVE to have it be either the standard MST OR daylight time – - but not both! Arizona, Hawaii and parts of Indiana don’t change! Let’s join them. I lived in Arizona and it was wonderful!!!!!
Kathy,
All of Indiana is on DST. As of 2006, with the exception of far Northwest and Southwest Indiana, the rest of the state is on Eastern time
I wish we’d just have Daylight Savings Time all year round. There’s no point in changing our clocks twice a year. Keeping the same time all year round makes sense to me. All my other friends who have young children hate it because it disrupts their schedule.
