Earth Day and the Modern Reality

Posted by Curtis Haring

Today marks the 40th Earth Day celebration and, rather than go on and on about how we are killing the Earth, I would just like to provide a little food for thought.

Just about everyone acknowledges that climate change is a reality – some (smart) people say the primary cause of this is due to man, while others claim it is just a natural cycle.

But consider this: ever since we planted and cultivated the first crops, man has been manipulating the Earth in an attempt to make it more hospitable – we have literally been using technology since the dawn of civilization to shape our world.

Today we are faced with bigger problems that require bigger solutions.  Why, then, are some so opposed to using modern technology to reduce the effects of pollution? They will claim that it is to protect the economy, but they fail to consider that technology has always lead to greater prosperity.

However I also like to ask the rhetorical question: what if we are just making the world a better place?

We need to use the tools at our disposal.  The recent volcanoes in Iceland show just how indifferent the world is to our needs – of course the volcanoes have nothing to do with climate change, but the point holds: we need to preserve the Earth as best we can because it is not going to take care of us on its own.

Finally, as per tradition, I like to provide you with this food for thought this Earth Day:
