Meet the Candidates: Laura Black, Democratic candidate for House District 45

Posted by Curtis Haring

Laura Black is the Democrat running in House District 45. Her opponents are Steven Eliason (R) and David Perry (C). Laura is the incumbent.

Her website is www.votelaurablack.com. At the time of publication no Facebook or Twitter account were provided. She can be contacted via email at house45black@aol.com.

1)      How long have you lived in your district and what made you move there in the first place?  I have lived House District 45 for the past 29 years.  Granted house district boundaries have changed but I’ve always managed to be included! I moved into this area because it represents a good cross section of socio-economics and cultural diversity, had good access to I-15, etc.  There has been a tremendous amount of growth and change in this area in the years I’ve lived here.

2)      What does your family look like (married; kids; pets)? I have one daughter who lives and teaches school in Colorado.  Two step-children who live in Utah County.  I have 10 grand children between them.  I’m currently single.  I have a wonderful rescued dog, Asa, who is always glad to see me at the end of a long day.

3)      What do you drive? 2002 Subaru Outback. What is your dream vehicle? 2011 Subaru Outback.

4)      What was the last book you finished?  Little Bee.

5)      What is your favorite store and/or restaurant in your district?  Not sure about the store but one of my favorite restaurants is High Point Thai Cuisine and Ganesh Indian Dining.  I don’t have to go beyond

6)      Turn your head to the right, what do you see?  The door in/out of my office.

7)      In 25 words or less, explain why you are a Democrat.  I am a Democrat because I wanted to be affiliated with a group that shares many of my personal values about democracy and has an inclusive mentality.

8)      Who would win if a bear and a shark fought each other (feel free to explain)?  The bear—he has four legs and can function out of the water.

9)      In 50 words or less, explain why you want to be a public servant.  I believe that “regular” people need to be willing to find a way to get involved.  We have a voice that isn’t being heard.

10)  What was the last cultural event you went to? It’s been a while but I have tickets for Red Butte/Mary Chapin Carpenter and a ticket to see Lion King in September.

11)  What are the three things you plan to fight for when elected?  I will continue to fight for quality public education, consumer protection, and we will have interesting debate on the immigration issues.

12)  Do you know what OMGWTFBBQ stands for?  Yes

13)  What is the most important amendment in the Bill of Rights?  The 19th amendment which gives women the right to vote.

14)  What is your favorite band?  All time favorite is The Eagles.

15)  If you could change one thing about your district, what would it be?  Acceptance of the many diverse cultural and socio economics that exist in House 45 boundaries.
