Meet the Candidates: Richard Watson, Democrat for House District 19

Posted by Curtis Haring

Richard Watson is running as the Democrat in House District 19. His opponents are Jim Nielson (R) and Reldon C. White (C). This is an open seat with no incumbent but was previously held by Sheryl Allen (R).

His website is www.rwatsoncampaign.org, and he can be found on Facebook by clicking here. not provide a Twitter account. He can be contacted via email at rjwatson@xmission.com.

Here are Richard’s answers to my absurd questions:

1) How long have you lived in your district and what made you move there in the first place? 22 years and we moved to Bountiful when we were married.

2) What does your family look like (married; kids; pets)? Married, wife’s name is Carol, with two boys, Andy, 17 and Bret, 14. We have 2 cats.

3) What do you drive? What is your dream vehicle? 2005 Honda Pilot. Dream Car: 2010 Ferrari California convertible with retractable hard-top. It’s on sale right now for $190,000.

4) What was the last book you finished? Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton.

5) What is your favorite store and/or restaurant in your district? Store: Dick’s Market (or any Associated Foods store). Restaurant: there are many including Mandarin, Pei Wei, Café Rio, La Frontera, and Vitos by the Tabernacle.

6) Turn your head to the right, what do you see? My office phone, a picture of my two boys when they were younger and photo collection of Bret at Aggie basketball camp, posing with his best friend, Jaycee Carroll and Coach Morrill.

7) In 25 words or less, explain why you are a Democrat. I have always advocated in helping others (not handouts) and giving everyone a chance to succeed. And be a voice of reason for those who do not have a voice in government.

8 ) Who would win if a bear and a shark fought each other (feel free to explain)? If it is a land shark, the bear would win because of his claws, unless it was a surprise “CandyGram” shark. If they are in the ocean, then the shark would win. I have to go with the “CandyGram” shark.

9) In 50 words or less, explain why you want to be a public servant. Same answer as question #7. And I would like to serve the public in a true, bipartisan way. Since most of the legislation on the hill are nonpartisan, I would like to work with other legislators and solve the current problems in Utah. I am not interested in playing games or being involved
with “sandbox” legislation.

10) What was the last cultural event you went to? Concert – Carole King and James Taylor

11) What are the three things you plan to fight for when elected? Public education and teachers, the rights of senior citizens and veterans, and working families and the middle class.

12) Do you know what OMGWTFBBQ stands for? Yes. LMAO!

13) What is the most important amendment in the Bill of Rights? I love the First Amendment because it guarantees individual freedom: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

14) What is your favorite band? Too many to choose from. I do favor U2, the Eagles, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Buffett.

15) If you could change one thing about your district, what would it be? Build up Main Street in Bountiful. But I know the Planning Commission is working on it and I have faith in our beautiful city will make Bountiful an even better place to live. I love Bountiful!
