With Congress planning on staying in session during the holiday to discuss changing the debt ceiling, I have to continually pound my head against a wall when I hear that Republicans absolutely refuse to move on raising taxes.

Now, I get it; Republicans don’t want to look weak against a president they can not stand, and they sure don’t want to be seen as tax raisers, but it is time to put bickering aside and actually start talking about real solutions to solving the debt and deficit crisis.

We often hear from Republicans that government should be run by a business – although with the implosion of Wall Street, they have started to back away from this comparison and have started to say that government’s budget should be run like a family budget. Either way, they seem to think that the only way that either of these institutions work is by cutting spending, not by making investments and looking for more revenue.

To be sure, in the short term both businesses and families have to cut back on some of the more luxurious items they may have in their budget. But at some point businesses and families can’t cut anymore and still be around – for a company, at some point they have to shutter the doors, and for a family they will need to, at some point, end up on the streets. With the debt ceiling debate, we are coming dangerously close to creating the same situation with our government.

We have all been through lean times, and many of us have probably worked for companies that had to make difficult decisions – but we often prevail. Why? Because after we have cut as much as we are able, we start to find ways to generate more revenue for ourselves. Businesses may cut prices, merge with a more successful company, or create a new product or service that brings in more money; families with budget shortfalls may have adults who gain more skills, becoming more employable, or take on a second job. In short, we find ways to get more cash.

So why, Republicans, can’t we do the same for government? If you truly feel that government should be run under these types of models, but your money where your mouth is.

Aside from the far right Tea Party, few feel that any more cuts can reasonably be made – no one wants to loose their social security, and many don’t see military budget cuts as an option – so where does that leave us?

Yup, ya need to raise taxes.

Step one would be getting rid of the Bush tax cuts and bring things back into line with pre-2001 tax rates (remember when Clinton handed Bush a surplus? Well this is part of the reason). But even this plan wont work. During the booming 50′s under Republican Eisenhower, the top rate was a whopping 91% , under Nixon it was 70%, even Reagan set the bar to 50%. In other words, Republicans were not afraid to raise taxes on the most wealthy (and we are talking the top 1% here).

During this entire time the deficit never topped $4 trillion – still high, but paltry when compared to today’s $14.4 trillion.

We need to generate more revenue, and the money is out there. High tax rates for the upper, upper class have existed during grand economic growth, and the “trickle down” Republicans are so fond of spouting surly should have produced something during the 30 years it has been advocated for. Indeed, as I alluded to before, when Clinton raised the tax rate to nearly 40%, our economy didn’t suffer, indeed it was boom times and we had a budget surplus.

Should we make cuts? Yes, that is part of sound policy. But we also need to bring in more money through taxation to ensure our books are balanced. By not moving on tax cuts, Republicans are playing a dangerous game – one that we can not afford to lose.

One disturbing and growing theme during the health care debate has been that far right conservatives are panning Obama is a socialist/un-American/Nazi who wants nothing more than to kill your grandmother. Of course, we on the left find this laughable if only because we remember the bad-old-days of the Bush administration.

Indeed, many on the left panned Bush as a Nazi and unabashedly screamed it at the top of our lungs at protests and rallies. Now, with a new party in power and new social policies being put into place, it almost should come as no surprise that the right shouts over what is wrong with where this country is headed.

Now, it is a fact that neither Bush nor Obama are or were Nazis, but I really do feel it behooves us to examine which side of the shouting match was more accurate:

Responses to Terrorism:

Hitler - In response to the Reichstag Fire, Hitler successfully calls on then President Hindenburg to enact the Reichstag Fire Decree – an act that suspended most civil liberties in Germany and was a political tool used by Nazis to gain political power.

Bush – In response to the September 11th attacks, the Bush Administration successfully enacts the USA PATRIOT Act – an act that reduced civil liberties in the United States and was often used by the Republican Party as a political tool.

Obama – Though currently stalled, the Obama Administration is attempting to close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center. The center holds prisoners of war for an indefinite period of time without receiving a trial.

Race:

Hitler – Subordination of various races, eventually leading to the Holocaust.

Bush – Questionable response to Hurricane Katrina leads the majority of African-Americans to question the Bush Administrations feelings toward race relations.

Obama – As the first African-American president, Obama often had to deal with race often and eventually spoke to the American people during his campaign about the issue in a frank and honest manor.

The Economy:

Hitler – Banned Labor Unions, initiated public works projects, placement of banks under strict government control.

Bush – Increased funding to the Department of Labor for the expressed purpose of enforcing the Landrum-Griffin Act, an act designed to monitor Union activity for legal wrong doing. During this time critics argue that new regulations are written to be intentionally confusing in order to make more unions violate the law.

Obama - Authorizes $144 Billion into public works projects in stimulus package and reenacts enforcement of post-depression era laws disregarded by the Bush Administration.

Foreign Policy:

Hitler – Withdrew from Geneva Convention, invaded countries without being provoked.

Bush - Unilaterally invaded Iraq after the United Nations stated that they would not support the war. Ignores various articles of the Geneva Convention stating that the war on terror was a new type of war where the old rules did not apply.

Obama – Starting the withdraw process of troops in Iraq and transferring many to Afghanistan, a war that the international community supports. International views of the United States have improved.

I am sure there are numerous examples that can be added to this…but I leave it up to you, dear reader, which president has followed more in Hitler’s goosestepping footprints?

Well today I finally got around to actually taking the TSA security test to make it possible for me to, you know, work at an airport.

What I found interesting was the oh so subtle messages that they implanted in this little online certification program were astounding. This certification was created in a post-9/11, pre-Obama Administration world wherein there was clearly a an xenophobic tint to it. There was a “we all know who the bad guys are – but we want to look like we don’t think that way” tint to it.

September 11th was directly referenced once, and there were several more allusions to the events leading up to it. Things like “flight schools have become the front line (you know after those terrorists went to classes to learn how to fly)” and “you are the eyes and ears (insert an SS reference at any point)” were laced throughout. What was really interesting, however, is how they follow all of this up with a statement along the lines of “the people out to get us could be any color and any gender, so don’t let your guard down” all while having a tone, again that says “you know what you are looking for, nudge, nudge, wink, wink.”

And this is the real point of this post. I am amazed of the subtle fear that government agencies are putting into our lives even to this day – seven and a half years after the events of 9/11. We are told constantly to be vigilant, protect the home front, keep an eye out for suspicious activity – if only because if you blink, if you flinch, if you have faith in your fellow man for even a moment, it would bring about the end of our republic.

You know what? I am tired of being told to be afraid. I am tired of having the same message shoved down my throat in a way that is so subtle and pervasive that it could almost be called subliminal. I am tired of the discussion being about reaction to disasters and not why these people hate us so much. I know that there are bad people out there who want to watch the world fall, but what I also know is that we are being raised in a culture of fear wherein we are still far more likely to die from preventable disease than from a terrorist attack.

If you would like to experience what I had to go through today, simply click here and follow the page. It did take about an hour to go through, though, so you really have to be dedicated to my blog!

So here is, word for word, what the website states – with my own commentary thrown in:

SarahPAC believes America’s best days are ahead (because the last eight were terrible). Our country, founded on conservative principles (such as radically overthrowing the reigning government and creating a liberal democracy) and the fight for freedom, must confront the challenges of the 21st century with integrity (insert any Bush Administration scandal), innovation (CLEAN COAL!), and determination(Palin for President in 2010!).

SarahPAC believes energy independence (Drill, baby, drill!) is a cornerstone of the economic security (especially for Alaska and Texas) and progress that every American family wants and deserves (now that liberals have pointed out that energy efficiency is a good thing).

SarahPAC believes the Republican Party is at the threshold of an historic renaissance (the Bull Moose Party thought the same thing) that will build a better future for all(rich, white, men *cough, cough*). Health care (lobby), education (vouchers *cough, cough*), and reform of government (but only after Nancy Peloci took over) are among our key goals. Join us today!

Late last night, as I was attempting to fall asleep, it finally dawned on me why Obama’s candidacy so captured Americas youth.

At the age of 24, I am one of the older members of Generation Y, a generation marked by political and social activists. What fully came into focus is that I have only known one president, President Bush. I was 16 when Bush was sworn in back in 2001, I was not even allowed to drive when Bush was sworn in, I was about as politically aware of the world as a carp.

So, over the past eight years, my entire political understanding has come from the framework built around the Bush Administration. The first years of my adult life were defined by policies that would directly contradict my understanding of America. The last third of my life has seen torture justified, illegal wars raged, unprecedented decreases in civil liberties, and growing xenophobia and closed minded-ness reign.

And so, here I am (as I imagine many of the people my age were) wondering what happened to the America I was told about in school when, all of a sudden, we find a candidate who talks about returning to this ideal. Finally our generation had a candidate who talked about hope and change.

I knew I liked it, but I did not know why.

Our generation did not know how odd of a campaign slogan “hope” really was. All we knew was the policies of today did not work and that we must try to do better. We had the “luxury” of knowing how bad things can be, and the lack of experience to be jaded in the eyes of politics. We had the ability to desire to dream. Some may say it was foolhardy, I say it shows the strength of our democracy.

Today, for the first time, I saw, and will remember a transition of power. I knew it had happened before, but I had no real idea how amazing it was until I just witnessed it. The idea that we as a nation can radically change our course with the utterance of 35 words known as the presidential oath of office.

When this blog post is due to be published, an utterly amazing and relatively uncommon thing is taking place in the most powerful nation in the world – the exchange of power not through violence, exile, or death, but with pomp and celebration.

Indeed, the swearing in of one president whilst the outgoing president sits idly by is truly a remarkable thing that speaks to the nature of our democracy. The formality speaks to the fundamental strength of our nation even during times of great political, social, and economic turmoil.

And it is this strength that ultimately makes our system work. You may disagree with President Obama as much as I disagree with President Bush, but we both know that we have a shot in four years to either try and change things or fight to keep the current administration. Our democracy requires this turnover of power to be frequent and lively.

So congratulations to the newly sworn in President Obama, may he be successful and lead our country to new heights.

The actions of Tim DeChristopher this past Friday should be lauded. For those of you who may not know, DeChristopher was able to find his way into a Bureau of Land Management auction of various parcels of land around Zion National Park designated for potential oil drilling and bid on them; artificially raising the price of the land and forcing legitimate bidders to up their bids in return. DeChristopher, having no way or intention of paying for these lots was effectively defrauding the government and was soon arrested.

Other attendees to the auction were, unsurprisingly, upset with DeChristopher, some calling his actions “sad” and, with what the Tribune suggests is an angry tone, wanted to “make him pay” the $1.8 million he owes to the Federal Government.

As I stated before, DeChristopher should be praised for his actions; and this is coming from someone who does not consider himself an environmentalist and is, at best a weak ally who values the importance of a cleaner world, but also understands that there is a practical need for development. Why, you may ask, then would I come rushing to the defense of DeChristopher? Simple, he stood up for what he believed in and he is willing to pay the price.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote “Good men must not obey laws too well.” Is it true that DeChristopher broke the law? Well I am no lawyer, but I am willing to bet he did. But is what he did wrong? I say no – his actions were a direct consequence of a system that ignores the will of the people, a system that puts the desires of the minority over the rights of the majority.

As DeChristopher put it in his own words “I have marched, held signs, written letters and spoken to my Congressman. I have built trails and removed invasive species in National Parks. I have educated friends on climate change and donated to a dozen different groups…It hasn’t worked.”

Indeed the past eight years of the Bush Administration have produced environmental policies that are less than eco-friendly. Environmentalists have continually fought a loosing battle against backroom deals that favor companies and ignore peoples desires to look upon God’s creation in its natural state.

The actions of DeCristopher are the natural progression of a civilized society – as opposed to uncivilized societies where we could reasonably expect a person like DeCristopher to blow up the BLM offices rather than simply sit in on an auction. I hope and trust that environmental groups don’t reach this level, but we must not forget that any group, ANY group, when marginalized and disregarded is capable of doing just about anything (and, of course, those actions should be looked upon with great disdain).

This is a democracy and nowhere more should civil disobedience be encouraged than in a system of government that is ruled by the people (in theory, of course, civil disobedience in a democracy would not be necessary as the will of all of the people would be taken into consideration at all times). I dare say that anyone opposed to this peaceful civil disobedience, whether you believe in his opinion or not, is not a true, freedom loving American.

The Revolutionary War, the womens rights movement, Rosa Park’s refusal to sit at the end of the bus, all were varying levels of disobedience that were necessary to the formation of a more perfect union. History may not note DeChristopher’s actions, but we can not deny that it is important that they took place.
